The inspiration for this initiative took root in an unexpected moment when a vital digital resource—the puuwaawaa.org website, managed by DOFAW on the Puʻuwaʻawaʻa region—unexpectedly fell into neglect and the domain was purchased and repurposed into a gambling site by entities with no ties to the community or its values. This loss highlighted a vulnerability in our digital landscape: important cultural and environmental resources can be as endangered in the digital world as they are on the ground. It was a call to action that we could not ignore.

The Mālama Initiative aims to create a network of websites like malamawaiakea.org, malamahilo.org, and malamapuuwaawaa.org, each a beacon of knowledge and connection for its respective community. These sites are more than mere repositories of information; they are living, breathing digital ecosystems that grow with their communities. They serve as platforms where history is preserved, cultural practices are showcased, and conservation efforts are detailed through interactive maps, virtual tours, and comprehensive archives.
